This Morning's Show

This morning's ZAP show at the Echo was amazing.

Set list:

PARKING ENFORCEMENT
FRANKENSTEIN
BUDDHA
HE'S SO PRETTY (AND I'M SO MEAN)
RUNAWAY ROMANCE
DRINKIN' WHISKEY & MAKIN' OUT
FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHT (TO PARTY) (BEASTIE BOYS COVER)
MEXICO CITY

Everyone looked, sounded, and performed amazingly well. Ilse pointed out to the crowd that they hadn't performed in three months and asked how they sounded. Someone in the audience said she'd never heard them sound better. I had to agree they were great. They were a little more loose and raw than in previous shows, but it worked. The chemistry between all the band members was a joy to see; they were obviously all having a blast just to play with each other again, and this joy was infectious.

Nascar Madagascar, Motor, LaLa Damage, and Black Market performed their killer set with fire and brimstone, passion and verve, musical smarts and lyrical humor. The timing, the energy, the spirit were awesome. By the end of the show, numerous excited concertgoers were spinning about in an impromptu pit, running around in circles and bouncing off each other. Two or three spontaneously enthusiastic audience-members jumped onstage to kiss a musician or to sing along. When the band played the Beastie Boys' anthem for the first time live, the audience went even more alive, seven or eight attendees jumping onstage to shout the chorus and douse the rest of the audience with beer. ZAP could barely play, they were so crowded onstage! There was also danger to the instruments with all those rowdy revelers in the mix. But no harm was done, and after the song was over, everyone climbed back down so ZAP could do one more song. It was a Dionysian explosion of spontaneous unrestrained, uninhibited emotion, which is why we love Zeitgeist Auto Parts, and a moment that will be long remembered. It was unbridled party passion!

The set went from circa 12:45 a.m. to 1:15 a.m., short but very, very sweet. What a show.
